Rochester, MN (January 4, 2026) – A rear-end collision on Highway 52 northbound at 41st Street in Rochester left one person injured on Saturday evening. The incident, which occurred around 6:04 p.m., involved a 2009 Mazda 6 and a 2006 Kia Sedona traveling in the same direction, according to Minnesota State Patrol records.

Authorities stated that the Mazda 6 was stopped in the middle lane of Hwy 52 NB when it was struck from behind by the Kia Sedona. Emergency responders, including the Rochester Police Department and Mayo Clinic Ambulance, arrived on scene to assist.

The driver of the Mazda, 20-year-old William Wallace Nigbur of Rochester, was transported to Saint Mary’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials confirmed he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. His passenger, 21-year-old Lucas Samuel Diekvoss, also of Rochester, was uninjured and had been wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Kia Sedona, 21-year-old Ibrahim Alkhalil Yahia Ibrahim, also from Rochester, did not sustain injuries. His airbag deployed, though officials noted he was not wearing a seat belt.

Road conditions at the time were dry, and no alcohol involvement was reported. The crash caused brief traffic delays as responders cleared the scene and treated those involved.

We extend our best wishes for a full and speedy recovery to William Wallace Nigbur.

Rear-End Collisions in Minnesota

Rear-end crashes like Saturday’s incident on Hwy 52 are among the most common types of roadway collisions and can occur in any traffic conditions, even on dry roads. They often result from driver inattention, following too closely, or failure to react in time to stopped or slowing vehicles.

Though often perceived as minor, rear-end crashes can cause significant injuries, especially when seat belts are not used. Head, neck, and spinal injuries are common outcomes for occupants of the impacted vehicle, and long-term effects may follow if prompt medical care isn’t administered.

In this case, the lack of seat belt use by both drivers increased the risk of injury. Proper restraint use remains one of the most effective ways to prevent serious harm in the event of a crash.

Highways like US-52 are high-speed corridors where a moment of distraction or misjudgment can quickly lead to dangerous consequences. Ongoing education about safe following distances, attentive driving, and consistent seat belt use is key to preventing future injuries.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a rear-end collision in Olmsted County or anywhere in Minnesota, it’s important to take steps to protect your legal and physical well-being.
