Kau, HI (August 3, 2026) – A 51-year-old woman died after a rollover crash involving two vehicles early on Saturday morning on Highway 11 near the 76-mile marker in Kau. The incident happened around 12:53 a.m. on August 1.
According to a preliminary investigation, a Toyota Highlander was turning onto the eastbound lane of Highway 11 from Kohala Blvd when a Toyota Tacoma approached at a high rate of speed. The Tacoma swerved into the westbound lane while trying to avoid the Highlander but struck the vehicle, causing both vehicles to hit a guardrail. The Tacoma overturned multiple times, and passenger Stephanie Ann Mello of Ocean View was ejected. She was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
The Tacoma driver, a 52-year-old Ocean View man, and the Highlander driver, a 60-year-old Ocean View woman, were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities continue to investigate the fatal crash, and more details may be released as the investigation progresses.
