Royalton Township, MI (April 22, 2026) – One person was killed, and several others were injured on Tuesday morning, April 21, in a multi-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 94 near M-63 in a construction zone.

Emergency units responded to the scene around 11:30 a.m., where deputies said a chain-reaction crash involved a U-Haul truck pulling a trailer, a semi-truck, a converted small bus, and a Buick SUV.

According to authorities, the U-Haul changed lanes suddenly in an active work zone, causing traffic behind it to brake sharply. A semi-truck was unable to stop in time and struck the bus, which then hit the SUV. Multiple passengers inside the bus were injured.

A man identified as Brian Luke, 41, was among the bus passengers and later died from his injuries. Several others were also hurt, though their conditions have not been fully released.

Authorities say the crash remains under investigation.

Our condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Brian Luke.

Why Chain-Reaction Crashes Are Common in Highway Construction Zones

Construction zones often require sudden lane shifts, reduced speed limits, and tighter driving spaces, which can increase the risk of rear-end and chain-reaction crashes. When one vehicle brakes unexpectedly, drivers behind may not have enough time or distance to react safely.

Large vehicles like semi-trucks require longer stopping distances, especially when fully loaded. In congested work zones, even small changes in traffic flow can quickly escalate into multi-vehicle collisions.

Visibility and driver attention are also major factors. Lane changes, merging traffic, and equipment near roadways can create additional hazards if drivers are not fully alert or traveling too fast for conditions.
