How Snow and Ice Can Contribute to Rollover Crashes
Snow- and ice-covered roads can reduce tire grip, making it harder for drivers to maintain control. Even slight steering or braking can cause a vehicle to slide, especially on rural highways with curves or uneven shoulders.
When a vehicle leaves the roadway and enters a ditch, the change in surface and angle can increase the chance of a rollover. Pickup trucks and other higher-profile vehicles may be more likely to tip in these situations.
Investigators often review road conditions, tire tracks, and vehicle movement to determine how the loss of control occurred. These factors help explain how the weather may have influenced the crash.
