SACRAMENTO, Sacramento County, Calif., Oct. 2, 2026 — A bicyclist died on Thursday morning, October 1, after a car struck him at the intersection of Broadway and Stockton Boulevard in the Oak Park neighborhood. The driver stayed at the scene and spoke with responding officers.

The Sacramento Police Department said officers were called to the intersection around 11 a.m. after reports that a car had hit a person on a bicycle, and they found the bicyclist at the scene; he was pronounced dead there. The driver remained on scene when officers arrived.

Detectives with the department's Major Collision Investigation Unit and crime scene investigators are now working to reconstruct how the crash happened. Fatal crashes inside city limits automatically bring in that unit along with forensic investigators, who run a mathematical reconstruction of the crash and evaluate vehicle dynamics.

This was not the first deadly crash at that corner. A male pedestrian was killed by a vehicle at the same intersection in the early morning hours of December 2, 2025, a case also investigated by Sacramento police. The intersection lies on the city's Vision Zero High Injury Network, the designation for streets with the heaviest concentration of serious crashes. City leaders approved a Broadway redesign project in July 2025 that would cut travel lanes from four to two and add protected bike lanes near Stockton Boulevard, and a separate Stockton Boulevard safety project launched in March 2026 is aimed at the corridor further south. Both remain in planning or early stages.

No names have been released for either the bicyclist or the driver, and the investigation remains open.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.

Bicyclist Deaths in Sacramento by the Numbers

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, bicycle fatalities decreased from 183 in 2022 to 145 in 2023 statewide, a sign of improvement even as individual cities continue to struggle with high crash counts. Sacramento has not mirrored that statewide dip. In 2023 rankings, the city finished worst overall among 15 large California cities on a composite crash safety index, placing third in bicyclist victims with 237 injured or killed and first in speed-related crashes.

That pattern has continued. By August 2026, ten bicyclists had been killed on Sacramento-area roads that year, and county data found 158 pedestrians and bicyclists killed across the county over the five years leading into mid-2026. City transportation officials have also found that 79% of all traffic collisions happen on just 14% of Sacramento's streets, the stretch mapped as the High Injury Network, a concentration that has pushed estimated repair costs for that network above $6 billion.

Intersections are a recurring feature in these numbers because bicyclists and turning or crossing vehicles share limited space and sightlines at the same point. State law requires drivers passing a bicyclist to move into another lane when possible or keep at least three feet of distance, a rule meant to reduce exactly this kind of collision risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a cyclist do after being hit by a car?

Call 911 immediately, even if injuries seem minor, so officers can document the scene and arrange medical care. Get the driver's information and ask for a copy of the police report once it's filed, and see a doctor promptly since some injuries, especially head or internal injuries, aren't obvious right away.

Do cyclists have the same rights to the road as drivers?

Yes. California law treats bicyclists as drivers of vehicles with the same rights and responsibilities, including the right to a full lane in many situations and the protection of the state's three-foot passing law.

Are intersections a common site for bicycle crashes?

Yes. Crossing and turning movements at intersections create more opportunities for a car and bicyclist to occupy the same space at the same time, which is why many city safety programs, including Sacramento's Vision Zero plan, target intersection redesigns first.

What injuries are most common in bicycle crashes?

Head injuries, broken bones, and road rash are common even in lower-speed collisions, since cyclists have no protective shell. Helmets reduce but don't eliminate the risk of serious head trauma.

What to Do After a Bicycle Crash in Sacramento, CA

If you're involved in or witness a bicycle crash, stay at the scene and call 911 so officers and paramedics can respond. Take photos of the vehicles, the roadway, and any visible injuries if it's safe to do so, and get contact information from anyone who saw what happened.

Follow up with a medical evaluation even if you feel fine at first, since adrenaline can mask pain from fractures or head injuries. Keep copies of any police report, medical records, and repair estimates for your bicycle, and reach out to your insurer to begin documenting the claim. Sacramento's police department and county advocacy groups can also direct you to resources on traffic safety improvements underway in the area.
