Frequently Asked Questions
How does a vehicle's speed affect a pedestrian's chance of survival?
Higher speeds give drivers less time to stop and increase the force of impact, which raises the likelihood of serious or fatal injury to a person on foot.
Where do pedestrian crashes usually happen?
Many occur on multi-lane roads outside marked crosswalks, especially where traffic moves at higher speeds and lighting is limited.
Are pedestrian crashes more common at night?
Reduced visibility after dark makes it harder for drivers to see people in the roadway, and a large share of fatal pedestrian crashes happen at night or in low-light conditions.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
If possible, call 911 immediately, stay at the scene, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, since some symptoms appear later.
