SAN ANTONIO, Bexar County, Texas, Oct. 18, 2026 — A commercial vehicle driver was seriously hurt Saturday night, October 17, after a speeding car rear-ended his vehicle and sent it rolling off the highway into a nearby business on the South Side. The crash happened around 9:32 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the 8500 block of Interstate 35 South, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

Police said a 2019 Dodge Challenger traveling at high speed struck the back of the commercial vehicle as it drove south.

The impact caused the commercial vehicle to roll over, leave the roadway, and crash into a private business nearby, SAPD said. The driver was taken to a hospital with injuries described as serious.

Investigators said the driver of the Dodge Challenger fled the scene on foot after the crash.

The case remains under review. Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are rollover crashes so dangerous?

A rollover can throw occupants against the roof, doors, or windows as the vehicle tips and spins, and the risk of being partly or fully ejected rises sharply if someone isn't belted in.

Which vehicles are most prone to rolling over?

Taller, narrower vehicles such as trucks, vans, and SUVs have a higher center of gravity and tip more easily than low, wide passenger cars, though any vehicle can roll over under the right conditions.

Does wearing a seat belt change the odds of surviving a rollover?

Yes. A seat belt keeps a person positioned inside the vehicle during the roll, which cuts the chance of being ejected and lowers the risk of severe injury.

What is a "tripped" rollover?

That's when a vehicle's tires catch on a curb, soft shoulder, guardrail, or other object and the sudden sideways force flips the vehicle, as opposed to a rollover caused by sharp steering alone.

What to Do After a Rollover Crash in San Antonio, TX

Anyone involved in a rollover should stay as still as possible until emergency crews arrive, since a rolled vehicle can shift or settle unexpectedly. If you're able to move safely, check on others nearby before attempting to exit the vehicle. Get checked at a hospital even if injuries seem minor, since impacts from a rollover can cause internal injuries that aren't obvious right away. Request a copy of the police report once it's available, and keep records of any medical visits or vehicle damage documentation in case they're needed later.
