WICHITA, Sedgwick County, Kan., Oct. 18, 2026 — A 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man died Saturday afternoon, October 17, after a pickup truck drove through youth soccer fields at the Stryker Sports Complex on North Greenwich Road in Wichita, Kansas. Wichita police said 11 other people were hospitalized.
A witness told local media the truck "came plowing through" the fields, striking several people before coming to a stop roughly 100 to 200 yards away, according to the account relayed to reporters. Authorities said the boy and the man who died were both from McPherson, Kansas, and were not related to each other.
Of the 11 people taken to hospitals, 10 suffered traumatic injuries. Those patients reportedly ranged in age from 5 to 68 and included several children. An additional 61-year-old woman was hospitalized for non-traumatic treatment. Investigators said none of the injuries to survivors are considered life-threatening.
The driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, is in custody and that there is no ongoing safety threat. Two girls were in the vehicle with her at the time, and officers mentioned she had a child playing soccer at the complex, though not on the field where the crash happened. Investigators mentioned the driver held a valid license and that they are still working to determine how and why the truck entered the field.
The crash happened near a field hosting the Kansas State High School Activities Association's flag football semifinals. Organizers suspended the remaining championship games and had spectators and athletes escorted off the property by state and local police. School officials from at least one participating district said their students and staff were accounted for and uninjured.
We are deeply sorry for the loss suffered by the victim's family.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a vehicle's speed affect a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Survival drops sharply as speed increases. At lower speeds pedestrians are more likely to survive being struck; at highway speeds, the odds fall off steeply because of the force involved in the impact.
Where do pedestrian crashes happen most often?
Many occur in parking lots, on roadways near crosswalks, or in areas where vehicles and foot traffic share close space, including event venues and sports complexes where cars and pedestrians sometimes cross paths unexpectedly.
Are pedestrian crashes more common at night?
Visibility plays a large role, and a large share of pedestrian deaths happen after dark, though daytime crashes like this one also occur, often in crowded public settings.
What should someone do immediately after being hit by a vehicle?
Call 911 right away, avoid moving if injury is suspected, and get checked by medical personnel even if injuries seem minor at first, since some symptoms take time to appear.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Wichita, KS
Anyone involved in or who witnesses a pedestrian crash should first make sure emergency responders have been called. Even bystanders who feel unhurt should be evaluated, since adrenaline can mask pain from internal injuries or fractures. It helps to write down what was seen as soon as possible, including vehicle details and the sequence of events, while memories are fresh. Families of those involved should keep records of hospital visits and any instructions from treating physicians. Community members affected by a traumatic event like this one may also benefit from talking to a counselor or support group in the days that follow.
