Frequently Asked Questions
Does the condition of the road surface matter for motorcycle safety?
Yes. Loose gravel, oil slicks, uneven pavement or wet surfaces can cause a motorcycle to lose traction much faster than a car, since a bike balances on two narrow contact points with the road.
What gear helps reduce injuries for riders?
A DOT-approved helmet, abrasion-resistant jacket and pants, gloves and over-the-ankle boots are commonly cited as reducing the severity of injuries in a crash, though they cannot prevent a collision from happening.
What usually causes multi-vehicle motorcycle crashes like this one?
Common factors include a vehicle merging or changing lanes without seeing the rider, sudden braking in heavy traffic, and reduced visibility, though the cause of any specific crash is determined by investigators, not assumed beforehand.
Why do motorcyclists tend to get hurt worse than other drivers in the same crash?
Riders lack the frame, airbags and seatbelts that enclose occupants in a car, so a collision or fall can throw them directly onto the pavement or into another vehicle.
