A 25-year-old man was driving a Toyota 4Runner east on Reed Avenue when he turned north onto Mission Boulevard. As he made that turn, he struck the woman, who was walking through the northern crosswalk at the intersection.
The woman was taken to a hospital with a fractured pelvis. Her condition had not been publicly released at the time of this report. Authorities confirmed that alcohol or drug impairment was not a factor in the crash.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our thoughts are with the injured woman as she recovers.
What Are the Risks for Pedestrians at Crosswalks in San Diego?
Crosswalk collisions in San Diego are more common than many people realize, particularly at busy intersections where turning vehicles and foot traffic converge. Drivers making turns often focus on gaps in oncoming traffic rather than checking for people already in the crosswalk, which can lead to serious crashes even when no reckless behavior is involved.
Pedestrians struck by vehicles tend to suffer significant injuries because the human body has no protection against the force of a moving car or SUV. Fractures, head trauma, and internal injuries are among the most frequently seen outcomes in these situations.
California law gives pedestrians the right of way in marked crosswalks, but that legal protection does not eliminate the physical danger. Intersections with heavy turn movements, like those throughout Pacific Beach, tend to pose a higher risk to pedestrians.
