Why Pedestrian Crashes at Intersections Can Be Especially Dangerous
Intersections are common places for pedestrian travel because they connect sidewalks and crossing areas. At the same time, they bring vehicles and people into proximity.
Drivers approaching intersections must watch for traffic signals, turning vehicles, and pedestrians crossing the roadway. In busy urban areas, these combined factors can increase the chance of a crash if a driver fails to notice someone in the crosswalk.
Visibility may also be affected at night. Street lighting, vehicle headlights, and surrounding buildings can sometimes make it harder to see pedestrians.
Because pedestrians have little physical protection, collisions with vehicles lead to serious outcomes. Even at moderate speeds, the impact from a moving vehicle can cause severe injuries.
