SAN FRANCISCO, San Francisco County, Calif., Oct. 27, 2026 — A crash involving a van and another vehicle blocked all northbound lanes of US-101 at the Golden Gate Bridge midspan early Tuesday morning, October 27, the California Highway Patrol said. Part of the center barrier was also blocking a lane.
The California Highway Patrol said the crash was first reported shortly after 6 a.m. as a collision involving a white van and another vehicle. The call was initially classified as a collision with unknown injuries before being updated to reflect that an ambulance had been requested.
All northbound lanes on the bridge were reported blocked, with a tow truck sent to the scene. Units coordinated a break in southbound traffic from the Spencer area so responders could reach the scene and manage the backup.
EMS was dispatched to evaluate those involved. The extent of the injuries has not been confirmed so far, and the CHP has not released further details on how many people or vehicles were involved beyond the initial report of a van versus another vehicle.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No additional information had been released as of Tuesday morning.
We are hoping for the best for everyone involved and their families.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does speed affect the severity of a crash like this?
Higher speeds reduce the time a driver has to react and increase the force of impact, which tends to raise the chances of serious damage or injury even in a short collision.
Why is distracted driving a concern in highway crashes?
Even a few seconds of looking away from the road can prevent a driver from reacting to sudden braking or lane changes, especially in congested or merging traffic like that on a bridge approach.
What should someone do immediately after a car accident on a highway?
Move to a safe location if possible, turn on hazard lights, check for injuries, and call 911. Exchange information with other drivers and wait for law enforcement to document the scene before leaving.
What to Do After a Car Accident in San Francisco, CA
If you're involved in a crash on a highway or bridge in San Francisco, try to move your vehicle out of traffic lanes if it's safe to do so, and turn on hazard lights to warn oncoming drivers. Check yourself and any passengers for injuries, and call 911 even if everything feels fine at first, since some injuries don't show symptoms right away. Stay inside your vehicle if you're stopped in a traffic lane on a bridge, where pedestrian exposure to passing cars is especially risky. Once you're safe, get checked out by a medical professional and keep any paperwork from the response for your records.
