How Pedestrian Crashes Can Occur at Urban Intersections
Urban intersections are common sites of pedestrian accidents due to the high volume of vehicles and pedestrians crossing streets simultaneously. Drivers may be turning, accelerating through green lights, or slowing for traffic while pedestrians are entering crosswalks.
Limited visibility can also contribute to these incidents. Parked cars, large vehicles, and buildings near intersections can block a driver’s view of someone crossing the street.
Traffic signal timing and driver attention can affect how safely vehicles and pedestrians share the roadway. Distractions, sudden stops, or vehicles changing lanes may increase the risk of a collision.
When a pedestrian is struck, they have little protection against the force of impact. Because of this, even low-speed crashes can result in serious injuries and require immediate medical care.
