What Challenges Do Investigators Face in Hit-and-Run Crashes?
Hit-and-run accidents can be difficult to investigate because one of the drivers leaves the scene before authorities can gather information directly from them. Investigators often rely on witness statements, traffic cameras, vehicle debris, and damage patterns to identify the vehicle involved. In freeway crashes, finding reliable evidence can become more challenging due to heavy traffic and limited visibility during evening hours.
Connector roads between major highways may also increase crash risks because drivers frequently change lanes or merge at higher speeds. After a hit-and-run collision, investigators commonly review the direction the suspect vehicle traveled and any reports from nearby motorists. Vehicle color, damage descriptions, and surveillance footage from surrounding roadways may later help identify the driver who left the scene.
