Why Head-On Crashes Result in Severe or Fatal Injuries
Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of traffic crashes because the force of impact is combined from both vehicles. Even at moderate speeds, the sudden deceleration can cause life-threatening injuries.
These crashes often occur when a vehicle drifts into an oncoming lane due to distraction, fatigue, or loss of control. Rural highways like SR 87 can increase risk due to higher speeds and limited physical separation between directions of traffic. Occupants in head-on crashes frequently suffer serious trauma to the head, chest, and abdomen.
Emergency responders prioritize rapid transport to trauma centers, especially when multiple victims are critically injured. Investigators typically examine lane position, roadway conditions, and driver behavior leading up to the collision to understand what occurred.
