SARASOTA, Sarasota County, Fla., Oct. 23, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash shut down lanes at Desoto Rd and N Honore Ave on Thursday morning, October 22, with crews needing extrication equipment to free at least one person trapped in a vehicle.
Roughly five vehicles came to rest in or near the intersection, blocking it. Emergency crews responding to the scene reported two vehicles with moderate to heavy damage, according to radio communications. One southbound lane and one northbound lane were closed while crews worked.
Extrication was requested early in the response, and additional units were called in around 11:07 a.m. to assist with freeing anyone trapped. The number of people injured and the extent of those injuries have not been released.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. It is not yet known how many vehicles were directly involved in the initial collision versus drawn into a secondary pileup, and authorities have not said whether charges are expected.
Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does fog or low visibility contribute to pile-ups?
When drivers can't see far ahead, they usually don't notice slowing or stopped traffic until it's too close to avoid. That delay in reaction time is a common factor in chain-reaction crashes involving several vehicles.
Why does following distance matter so much in traffic?
A longer gap between vehicles gives a driver more time to brake or steer around trouble. In heavy or fast-moving traffic, a short following distance can turn one car's sudden stop into a multi-vehicle collision.
Do secondary crashes usually happen after the first one?
Yes. Once a crash blocks a lane or intersection, approaching drivers who don't slow down in time can strike stopped vehicles or emergency responders, adding to the number of vehicles and injuries involved.
Why are multi-vehicle crashes harder to investigate?
With several vehicles and drivers involved, investigators have to sort out the order of impacts, speeds, and positions from physical evidence, witness accounts, and any available video, which takes more time than a two-car crash.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Sarasota, FL
If you're involved in a crash with several other vehicles, stay inside your car if it's not safe to exit, especially if you're in a live traffic lane, and wait for responders to help direct you. Turn on hazard lights if your vehicle can still move safely to the shoulder. Even if you feel fine, ask to be checked by EMS on scene since injuries from multi-vehicle impacts aren't always obvious right away. Get the names and badge numbers of responding officers and ask how to obtain the official crash report once it's filed, since that document will matter for insurance and any follow-up questions about what happened.
