Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes motorcycle crashes like this one?
Motorcycle crashes usually involve a vehicle failing to see the rider in time, sudden lane changes, following too closely, or a driver misjudging the motorcycle's speed or distance in traffic.
Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause more serious injuries than other collisions?
Riders have no frame or airbags around them, so in a crash they can be thrown from the bike or into another vehicle, which usually leads to severe injuries even at moderate speeds.
How do left-turning vehicles contribute to motorcycle collisions?
A common pattern involves a car turning left across a motorcyclist's path because the driver misjudges the rider's speed or does not see the bike at all, resulting in a direct collision.
What can drivers do to spot motorcycles more easily?
Checking mirrors and blind spots twice, allowing extra following distance, and watching intersections carefully for smaller vehicles can help drivers notice motorcycles before it's too late.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Crash in Washington Heights, NY
If you witness or are involved in a motorcycle crash, call 911 immediately and stay clear of moving traffic until help arrives. Even if injuries seem minor, a medical evaluation is important, since some injuries from a motorcycle crash, including head trauma or internal injuries, aren't obvious right away. Get the names and contact information of any witnesses, and request a copy of the police report once it's filed. If you're a rider recovering from a crash, give yourself time, follow up with medical providers, and keep records of any treatment, as this documentation can matter later.
