Staten Island, NY (June 8, 2026) – Ten people were brought to Richmond University Medical Center for evaluation on Monday morning, June 8, after a school bus and car collided in Brighton Heights.

The accident was reported around 7:45 a.m. near 450 Castleton Avenue, between Brighton Avenue and Ridgewood Place. I.S. 61, the Morris Intermediate School, is located near the address listed in the report.

The school bus was traveling east on Castleton Avenue when a car driven by a 49-year-old man attempted to merge into the road from a parked position. The car and bus then became involved in the wreck.

The bus had 12 passengers, including one adult and 11 children. No further medical details about the collision were immediately available. Investigators are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the school bus case.

We hope everyone evaluated receives the care and support they need.

Bus Passenger Evaluations Help Identify Hidden Injuries

School bus collisions can lead to medical evaluations even when injuries are not fully clear at first. Children may feel shaken after a sudden jolt, and some symptoms may not appear right away.

Passenger checks are especially common when several people are riding together. Medical teams may look for pain, dizziness, bruising, or signs of head or neck trauma. These checks help confirm whether any student or adult needs further care.

Crashes involving buses and smaller vehicles may also require closer review because the vehicles differ in size and height. Seating position, seat spacing, and how the bus was struck may affect how passengers feel afterward. Early reports usually list the number of people evaluated before full medical findings are available.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
