Police typically need several weeks to finalize a fatal-crash investigation, since toxicology results, crash reconstruction and witness interviews can take time to complete.
Does impairment play a role in fatal crashes?
Alcohol and drugs are factors in many fatal crashes nationwide, but whether impairment was involved in a specific case is only confirmed once investigators release toxicology or lab results.
Where do fatal crashes most frequently happen?
Rural highways and roads with higher speed limits see a large share of fatal crashes, since higher speeds reduce the time a driver has to react and increase the force of impact.
