How Investigators Examine Fatal Commercial Vehicle Collisions

Fatal crashes involving commercial trucks require detailed investigations due to the vehicles’ size and the complexity of the collisions. Investigators typically examine vehicle damage, skid marks, electronic data recorders, roadway conditions, and witness statements to reconstruct the events leading up to the crash.

When appropriate, investigators may also review toxicology results, seat belt use, driver qualifications, and vehicle maintenance records. These findings help determine the cause of the collision and whether any mechanical, environmental, or human factors contributed to the fatal incident.
