What Makes Railroad Crossings Dangerous for Large Trucks?
Railroad crossings can be particularly challenging for large commercial vehicles because trucks and trailers require more time and distance to clear the tracks. A driver may also need to account for the length of the vehicle and the possibility of traffic stopping on the other side of the crossing. Knowing the vehicle’s dimensions and leaving enough space beyond the tracks can help prevent a truck from becoming trapped in a crossing.
Drivers should approach railroad crossings at a controlled speed and pay close attention to warning lights, bells, and crossing gates. If a crossing is blocked or traffic conditions prevent a vehicle from completely clearing the tracks, the driver should not enter. Commercial drivers also need to consider whether the roadway surface, grade, or tight turns could affect their ability to cross safely.
Weather and visibility can add another layer of difficulty, particularly at night, during heavy rain, or in areas with limited lighting. Keeping windows and mirrors clear can help drivers maintain awareness of their surroundings. Extra caution is important when a crossing is unfamiliar or when nearby roads and tracks intersect at unusual angles.
