Bourbon Co., KS (May 29, 2026) – One man was seriously injured Thursday morning, May 28, after a minivan and semitrailer collided on U.S. Highway 54 in Bourbon County.
The crash was reported at about 9:35 a.m. on U.S. Highway 54, just east of 165th Street and about six miles northwest of Fort Scott. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan and a 1993 Peterbilt semitrailer were involved.
Officials said the Dodge was traveling east on U.S. Highway 54 when it crossed the center line and collided with the westbound semitrailer. The Dodge struck the rear axles of the trailer.
The Dodge driver, identified as 58-year-old Kurtis W. Pagles of Lyndon, was taken to Freeman Fort Scott Hospital with serious injuries. The patrol said he was not wearing a seat belt.
The semitrailer driver, identified as 21-year-old Bravon C.M. Black of Joplin, Missouri, was not injured. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles.
The crash remains under review as investigators continue gathering details. We hope the injured man receives steady care and support during recovery.
Why Semitrailer Accidents Can Cause Serious Injuries
Crashes involving semitrailers can be severe because of the size and weight difference between large trucks and smaller passenger vehicles. Even when a smaller vehicle strikes part of a trailer rather than the cab, the force can cause major damage and serious trauma.
Medical teams may check for head, chest, spine, leg, and internal injuries after a highway collision. Seat belt use, vehicle speed, lane position, and the point of impact can all affect injury severity. Investigators may review road markings, vehicle damage, travel direction, witness statements, and roadway conditions to understand how the vehicles came together.
