What Can Contribute to Head-On Collisions on Rural Roads?
Head-on collisions on rural roads usually occur on undivided highways where there is less separation between directions of traffic. These crashes may happen due to lane departures, unsafe passing, or drivers losing control of their vehicles. Visibility, speed, and road conditions can also play a role in how quickly a situation develops.
After a crash, responders focus on checking for injuries and clearing vehicles from the roadway. Investigators may review roadway markings, vehicle positions, and damage patterns to understand how the collision occurred. Rural intersections and stretches of road can present added challenges due to limited lighting and longer response times.
