What Happens During a Fatal Crash Investigation on a Highway?
When a fatal crash occurs on a highway, investigators work to secure the scene and document all physical evidence before vehicles are moved. This can include photographing vehicle positions, documenting roadway damage, and collecting debris patterns to help reconstruct the sequence of events.
Because highways require closures during serious incidents, traffic management becomes a priority to protect both responders and other drivers. Once the roadway is reopened, investigators continue reviewing evidence such as vehicle damage, witness statements, and roadway conditions to better understand how the crash occurred. These findings may be updated as the investigation continues.
