Polk, WI (August 18, 2026) – Several people were hurt on Monday morning when two semis and four passenger vehicles collided on southbound I-41 near Highway 60.

The wreck happened around 7 a.m. on August 17, as traffic had slowed or stopped in the southbound lanes. Investigators said a fully loaded semi struck several passenger vehicles and another semi.

One passenger vehicle became vertically pinned between the two semis. Two adults and a toddler were inside that vehicle when the collision occurred.

Ambulances took four adults to hospitals. The toddler was flown to Children’s Wisconsin for treatment, while a sixth person later drove to a hospital.

The sheriff said everyone was in stable condition, although some people could require surgery. Southbound I-41 at Hwy K reopened around 2:30 p.m. Investigators are still working to determine why the semi failed to stop before reaching the slowing traffic.

We wish everyone hurt in the collision a steady and complete recovery.

What Can Make Highway Chain-Reaction Crashes More Serious?

Highway chain-reaction accidents can involve several vehicles within seconds. When traffic slows quickly, drivers may have limited time to brake or change lanes safely.

Semi-trucks need more distance to stop than most passenger vehicles. Their weight and size can increase the force involved when they strike another vehicle.

A passenger vehicle caught between two larger trucks can face severe crushing forces. Rescue operations may take additional time when vehicles become pinned together.

Children involved in major highway accidents may receive specialized evaluation because their injuries can differ from those of adults. Doctors may monitor them for both visible and less obvious signs of trauma.

Traffic conditions, vehicle spacing, speed, braking, roadway design, visibility, and video footage can all help establish how a multi-vehicle accident developed.
