How Investigators Examine Multi-Vehicle Highway Crashes
Crashes involving several vehicles usually require a detailed investigation to determine how the sequence of events unfolded. Investigators typically examine vehicle damage, roadway evidence, driver statements, and witness accounts to establish the order of impacts.
Traffic conditions, vehicle speeds, lane positions, and driver reactions may also be reviewed. Physical evidence such as skid marks, debris fields, and final vehicle locations can provide important clues about what occurred before and during the collision.
Because multiple vehicles are involved, investigators frequently work to determine whether one event triggered subsequent impacts or whether separate collisions occurred in rapid succession. The information gathered helps authorities better understand the factors that contributed to the crash and assists in completing the official accident report.
