Why Disabled Vehicles on Highways Can Increase Crash Risk
When a vehicle becomes disabled in a travel lane, it can create a sudden hazard for oncoming traffic, especially in low-light or early-morning conditions. Larger vehicles, such as buses and trucks, may have limited time and distance to safely stop or maneuver around obstacles.
Investigators typically review roadway visibility, lighting, warning signals, and vehicle positioning to understand how the crash occurred. In multi-vehicle incidents, they may also assess reaction time and speed to determine why a collision could not be avoided. These factors help explain how disabled vehicles can contribute to secondary crashes.
