Why Lane Blockages Can Increase Risks After a Highway Collision
When a collision blocks even one lane of a highway, traffic can slow quickly as drivers merge into the remaining open lane. This sudden reduction in available roadway may increase the risk of secondary collisions if approaching motorists do not have enough time to react.
Emergency personnel often position their vehicles to create a protective buffer while assisting those involved and clearing damaged vehicles from the roadway. Drivers who reduce their speed and move over when it is safe to do so help provide a safer working environment for everyone at the scene. Once the roadway has been cleared and any hazards have been removed, traffic typically returns to its normal flow.
