San Leandro, CA (July 8, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash blocked several southbound lanes of I-880 just south of the Marina Boulevard off-ramp early Tuesday morning, July 7.

According to the California Highway Patrol traffic log, the first reports came in at approximately 2:22 a.m., indicating that five to eight vehicles were involved and that lanes three and four were blocked. A vehicle caught fire during the chain of events, and debris, including a tire, was scattered across multiple lanes. One driver reported striking the tire, while another vehicle became disabled after debris lodged underneath it.

Dispatch records also indicated that several young people ran from the burning vehicle before another vehicle stopped and picked up one driver. A separate crash occurred after another vehicle struck debris left in the roadway. Emergency units worked to clear the freeway, and a tow truck was requested to remove damaged vehicles. The cause of the crash remains under investigation as additional information is gathered.

We hope everyone involved remains safe and unharmed.

Why Debris Can Create Additional Highway Hazards

Debris left on a freeway after a traffic crash can quickly create new dangers for other drivers. Tires, vehicle parts, and other objects may be difficult to see, especially during overnight or early morning hours when visibility is limited. Even motorists who avoid the original crash may encounter unexpected obstacles that lead to secondary collisions.

Chain-reaction crashes are common when drivers have little time to slow down or safely change lanes. Vehicles that strike debris can suffer tire damage, loss of steering control, or mechanical problems that increase the risk of further roadway hazards. Clearing damaged vehicles and debris as quickly as possible helps restore safer driving conditions, though motorists should always reduce speed and remain alert when approaching emergency activity on busy highways.
