Shenango Twp., PA (March 19, 2026) – New details have been released following a fatal crash that shut down westbound lanes of I-80 in Mercer County on Wednesday, March 18.
The crash happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. in Shenango Township, just east of Bethel-Wilmington Road. Authorities say a 2024 Ram 3500 pickup, driven by 26-year-old Carlos Valdivia-Perez of New Jersey, struck the rear of a 2018 Ford Focus.
After the initial impact, the Ford was pushed forward into a semi-truck operated by 50-year-old Wilner Dompierre of New York. The car went partially under the trailer and became stuck beneath it.
Valdivia-Perez was cited for following too closely, according to the report. He and the semi driver were taken to the hospital with possible injuries.
The 81-year-old driver of the Ford, from Clarion, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials said he suffered blunt force trauma to the head and chest. His identity has not yet been released.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
What Happens When Multiple Vehicles Collide on a Highway?
When several vehicles are involved in a highway crash, the sequence of impacts often determines the level of damage and injury. Rear-end collisions can push smaller vehicles into others, creating a chain reaction that increases the risk of serious harm.
Large trucks add another layer of risk due to their size and weight. When a smaller car becomes trapped under a trailer, it can cause severe damage, especially to the front of the vehicle. This type of impact is often called an underride crash.
Road conditions, speed, and following distance are also key factors in these situations. Even a brief lapse in attention can lead to a rapid series of impacts, especially on busy highways where traffic moves quickly.
