Why Crashes Involving Parked Vehicles Can Result in Serious Injuries
Collisions involving stationary vehicles can produce significant force, particularly when they occur at higher speeds or during overnight hours. Because parked vehicles do not move to absorb energy, much of the force can be transferred directly to the occupants of the moving vehicle.
These crashes may also increase the likelihood of entrapment when vehicle structures become heavily damaged. In severe cases, occupants can require specialized rescue efforts before they can be safely removed. Investigators often review factors such as visibility, driver attention, roadway conditions, and vehicle speed when examining crashes involving parked vehicles. The severity of injuries can vary widely depending on the angle of contact, the number of vehicles involved, and whether occupants were properly restrained at the time of the collision.
