Endwell, NY (June 24, 2026) – Six people died, and at least two others were injured after a fire broke out at a hotel on E Main Street in Endwell early on Monday morning.

According to New York State Police, the fire was reported at approximately 6:00 a.m. at the Knights Inn located at 2603 E Main Street. Emergency units arrived to find heavy black smoke and flames coming from the rear of the building.

At least two people were taken to UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City for treatment. Multiple residents were displaced by the fire and were receiving assistance, including temporary shelter.

Fire departments from several nearby communities assisted in bringing the flames under control. The identities of those who died have not yet been released.

Investigators continue to examine the cause and circumstances surrounding the fatal fire. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died.

How Hotel Fires Can Create Complex Emergency Challenges

Hotel fires can be especially challenging because buildings often contain many rooms, multiple floors, and a large number of occupants who may be unfamiliar with the layout. Smoke can spread quickly through hallways and shared spaces, creating dangerous conditions for people trying to leave.

Fire safety systems, including alarms, sprinkler systems, and clearly marked exits, can play a major part in helping occupants recognize danger and evacuate. Regular maintenance and inspections are designed to identify potential hazards before they escalate into serious fires.

Investigators examining a large building fire typically examine where the flames began, how the fire spread through the structure, and whether building systems functioned as expected. Evidence collected during the review can help explain the fire’s progression and provide information about what occurred inside the building.
