Why Can Multi-Vehicle Pileups Be Difficult to Assess?
Multi-vehicle pileups may involve several separate points of contact within a few seconds. One vehicle may slow suddenly, causing drivers behind it to brake or change lanes with little warning. Large trucks can create added hazards when they tip onto their sides and block several travel lanes.
Determining the order of contact often requires comparing vehicle damage, tire marks, roadway debris, and final stopping positions. Statements from drivers and passengers may also help establish how the vehicles were moving before they came together.
Traffic cameras and dashboard recordings can provide another view of the sequence. Weather, visibility, traffic flow, and following distance may also be reviewed because each factor can affect how quickly drivers recognize danger and react.
