Warrensburg, MO (May 21, 2026) – Three people were hurt on Wednesday afternoon after a head-on collision on Missouri Business 13 Highway near Warrensburg in Johnson County. The accident happened at 2:39 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20. A southbound Dodge Durango braked and began skidding, crossed the center of the roadway, and struck a northbound Hyundai Tucson.
The 58-year-old driver of the Durango, from Warrensburg, was seriously hurt and flown by life flight to a regional medical center. The 28-year-old driver of Tucson, from Higginsville, and a 36-year-old male passenger from Warrensburg both suffered moderate injuries and were taken by ground transport to a nearby hospital. Both vehicles were towed from the crash site: the Tucson was totaled, and the Durango sustained extensive damage. The wreck is still under review, and more details will be released as they are provided.
We wish all three men a full recovery and hold them in our thoughts during this difficult time.
How Center-Line Crossover Crashes Happen and Why They Are So Dangerous
Center-line crossover crashes occur when a vehicle loses control and crosses into oncoming traffic, leaving the other driver little or no time to react. Braking suddenly on a road, particularly at higher speeds, can cause a vehicle to skid if traction is lost, especially when the road surface offers limited grip. Once a vehicle begins skidding, steering becomes unreliable, and the driver may be unable to correct course before reaching the opposing lane.
Head-on collisions that result from crossover crashes are among the deadliest types of two-vehicle wrecks, because both vehicles are typically moving toward each other at the time of contact. The combined closing speed dramatically increases the severity of the collision, which is why serious and life-threatening injuries are common even when safety devices are in use.
