Why Multiple Crashes Can Happen Close Together on Busy Interstates
Secondary crashes often occur on busy highways when drivers suddenly encounter slowed or stopped traffic from an earlier collision. Congestion, limited reaction time, and high travel speeds can quickly create dangerous conditions for approaching vehicles.
Investigators commonly review traffic patterns, lane blockages, and driver response times when examining closely timed interstate crashes. Sudden braking and changing lanes to avoid stopped vehicles may increase the chance of additional collisions nearby. Emergency response activity and reduced visibility around crash scenes can also contribute to traffic hazards. In many cases, investigators analyze whether the first incident created conditions that led to subsequent crashes along the roadway.
