Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most head-on crashes happen?
They are common on two-lane highways and rural roads without a median, where opposing lanes of traffic are separated only by a painted line.
What role does passing play in head-on crashes?
Attempting to pass another vehicle on a two-lane road is a frequent factor, since it puts a driver temporarily in the oncoming lane with less room to react if traffic appears.
How do median barriers help prevent head-on crashes?
Physical barriers between opposing lanes keep vehicles from crossing into oncoming traffic, which is why many highway safety projects add them to stretches with a history of these crashes.
What should I do if a car drifts into my lane?
Slow down, move right toward the shoulder if possible, and avoid swerving sharply left, since that can put you directly into the path of other oncoming vehicles.
