Understanding Pedestrian Crash Risks at Night
Pedestrian crashes are more likely to result in serious or critical injuries, especially during nighttime hours when visibility is reduced. Drivers may have difficulty seeing pedestrians in low-light conditions, particularly on busy roadways or in areas without adequate street lighting.
Crossing outside of marked crosswalks, wearing dark clothing, or unexpected movement into traffic can further increase the risk. At the same time, drivers must remain vigilant, reduce speed in urban areas, and watch carefully for pedestrians.
Improving visibility and staying alert—both for drivers and pedestrians—can help reduce the likelihood of these serious incidents.
