Why Single-Vehicle Rollover Crashes Occur
Rollover crashes often happen when a vehicle leaves the roadway at speed or encounters obstacles like trees, curbs, or uneven terrain. Vehicles can tip or roll due to sudden changes in direction or collisions with objects that destabilize them.
Even without other vehicles involved, rollovers can cause serious injuries because the occupant may be thrown inside the vehicle or against interior surfaces. Safety restraints like seatbelts help reduce the severity of injuries. Roadway conditions, driver actions, and vehicle type all influence the likelihood of a rollover.
