Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes pedestrian crashes like this one?
Common factors include low visibility, drivers failing to see someone in or near a travel lane, and pedestrians or cyclists sharing roadways that lack sidewalks or bike lanes. Investigators typically review vehicle speed, lighting, and road conditions before determining a cause.
Does vehicle speed affect a pedestrian's chance of survival?
Yes. Survival rates drop sharply as striking speed increases, since faster impacts deliver more force and leave less time for a driver to react or stop.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
Many occur on roads without sidewalks or marked crosswalks, especially where pedestrians or cyclists travel in or near a vehicle lane after dark.
Are these crashes more common at night?
Yes. Reduced visibility after dark is a major factor in pedestrian deaths, particularly on rural or unlit roads.
