Frequently Asked Questions
Are pedestrian crashes more likely to happen at night?
Reduced visibility after dark makes it harder for drivers to see people walking, especially on highways or roads without lighting, so nighttime crashes tend to carry a higher risk of serious injury.
What should a pedestrian do immediately after being struck by a vehicle?
If possible, call 911, move to a safe location away from traffic, and seek medical evaluation right away, since some injuries are not immediately obvious.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
In most states, pedestrians in a marked or unmarked crosswalk have the right of way, but drivers and walkers both need to stay alert, particularly where there's no dedicated crossing, such as a highway shoulder or travel lane.
What can drivers do to avoid hitting someone on foot?
Staying attentive, slowing down in low-visibility conditions, and watching shoulders and travel lanes for unexpected pedestrians can help drivers react in time.
