Frequently Asked Questions
How are fatal crashes like this one investigated?
State police typically document the scene, interview witnesses, inspect both vehicles, and review any available video or data before determining how a crash happened. For crashes involving a semi, investigators often examine logs and equipment as part of that process.
How long does a fatal-crash investigation usually take?
Initial findings can come out within days, but a full report, especially one involving a commercial truck, often takes several weeks to a few months as toxicology results and mechanical inspections are completed.
Does impairment play a role in fatal crashes?
It can, but investigators don't assume it without evidence. Toxicology screening and blood tests, when conducted, are usually part of building the final report.
Where do fatal crashes tend to happen?
Highways and interstates, especially during early morning or overnight hours when visibility is lower and traffic patterns shift, see a recurring share of serious collisions.
What to Do After a Highway Crash in Springfield, Illinois
If you're involved in a highway crash, try to move to a safe location if your vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so, then call 911. Stay as far from moving traffic as possible while waiting for help. Even if you feel fine, seek a medical evaluation soon afterward, since injuries from a collision aren't always obvious right away.
Get the responding agency's report number and the names of any officers at the scene. If you're able, take photos of the vehicles, the roadway, and any visible damage. Reach out to your insurance company promptly, and keep records of any medical visits, vehicle repairs, or missed work tied to the crash. Give yourself time to process what happened. These events are jarring, and it's normal to need support in the days that follow.
