What Can Contribute to Pedestrian Crashes on Highways
Pedestrian incidents on highways are less common but can result in severe injuries due to high vehicle speeds. Interstates are designed for fast-moving traffic, which reduces the time drivers have to react when a person is on the roadway.
Visibility can also be limited, especially in areas not intended for pedestrians. Curves, large vehicles, and changing traffic patterns may make it harder for drivers to see someone ahead.
When a large vehicle, such as a semi-truck, is involved, its size and stopping distance can increase the severity of a crash. Road design and traffic flow both affect how these situations develop.
