ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Belmont County, Ohio, Oct. 21, 2026 — Two people were hurt on Tuesday night, October 20, in a motorcycle crash on Route 9 near Unity Church Road, between Fairpoint and New Athens. St. Clairsville units and the Ohio State Highway Patrol were sent to the scene around 10:23 p.m.
A report of the crash described two possible patients. Harrison County crews were also dispatched for what was initially thought to be a separate motorcycle crash, but it turned out to be the same incident. An air medical helicopter was placed on standby with a response time of about 13 minutes, but it was canceled once crews reached the scene and determined the injuries, while serious, did not appear to be life-threatening.
Responders on scene described the motorcycle's driver as appearing to be highly intoxicated. A female passenger was reported to be in and out of consciousness and was taken to a hospital in Wheeling. The male driver initially refused treatment from emergency medical crews; one responder noted on the radio that his level of intoxication meant he could not be taken into custody in that condition. He was reportedly transported as well a short time later.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol remained on scene into the night as a tow was called for the motorcycle. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation, and no charges have been confirmed as of this report.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What gear helps protect a motorcyclist in a crash?
A DOT-approved helmet, a protective jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots all help reduce the severity of injuries in a fall or collision. Reflective or bright gear can also help other drivers see a rider sooner.
What usually causes motorcycle crashes?
Common factors include impaired or distracted driving, speeding, drivers failing to notice a motorcycle in traffic, and turning vehicles crossing a rider's path.
Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause more serious injuries than car crashes?
A motorcycle offers no outer frame or airbags to absorb impact, so riders are more exposed to the road and other vehicles even at lower speeds.
How do left-turning vehicles cause collisions with motorcycles?
A car turning left across an intersection or driveway can misjudge a motorcycle's speed or distance, or simply not see it, putting the bike directly in its path as it turns.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Crash in St. Clairsville, Ohio
Anyone involved in a motorcycle crash should get checked by medical personnel at the scene, even if injuries seem minor at first. Adrenaline can mask pain, and some injuries, especially head and internal injuries, aren't obvious right away. If you're a passenger or witness, stay put until first responders say it's safe to move, and give OSP or local police an accurate account of what you saw while it's fresh. Keep any paperwork from the scene, including the incident report number, and follow up with your own doctor in the days after, even after an ER visit, to make sure nothing was missed.
