Frequently Asked Questions
Are motorcycle crashes more likely to happen at intersections?
Yes. A large share of motorcycle collisions occur at or near intersections, usually because other drivers fail to see a motorcycle while turning or merging. Highway crashes like this one, involving a towed trailer, can happen outside intersections too, sometimes tied to lane changes or following distance.
Does the road surface affect motorcycle safety?
Yes. Wet pavement, loose gravel, potholes, and highway seams reduce tire grip more for motorcycles than for cars, making braking and steering harder. Riders are encouraged to adjust speed and following distance based on surface conditions.
What gear helps reduce injury for riders?
A DOT-approved helmet, abrasion-resistant jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots all help reduce the severity of injuries in a crash. Reflective or high-visibility gear can also help other drivers spot a motorcycle sooner.
What usually causes motorcycle accidents?
Common causes include drivers failing to see motorcycles in traffic, sudden lane changes, following too closely, and impaired or distracted driving. Hit-and-run cases like this one add the added factor of a driver leaving the scene instead of stopping to help.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Accident in Raleigh, NC
If you're involved in a motorcycle crash in Raleigh, get to a safe spot off the roadway if you're able, and call 911 right away. Even injuries that seem minor at first, like road rash or joint pain, can turn out to be more serious once swelling sets in, so a medical evaluation is worth getting the same day.
Try to note details while they're fresh: the time, location, direction of travel, and anything you remember about other vehicles nearby, especially in hit-and-run situations where a description can help investigators. If there are witnesses, ask for their contact information before they leave.
File a police report if one hasn't already been started, and keep copies of any paperwork from the hospital or responding officers. These records can matter later, even if it's not clear yet how serious the injuries turn out to be.
