St. James, NY (May 19, 2026) – A motorcyclist suffered serious injuries Monday evening following a collision at the intersection of Middle Country Road and Southern Boulevard in St. James.

The crash happened around 7:05 p.m. when a 2016 KTM motorcycle traveling eastbound on Middle Country Road collided with a 2014 Honda Pilot that was turning left onto Southern Boulevard from the westbound lanes.

Officials identified the motorcyclist as 29-year-old Daniel Youngelman of Smithtown. He was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries following the collision.

The driver of the Honda Pilot, identified as 66-year-old Annette Rousselle of Centereach, was also taken to the same hospital with injuries described as minor.

Authorities said both vehicles were impounded for safety inspections as investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the accident.

We are thinking of those injured as they continue to recover.

Why Left-Turn Motorcycle Crashes Result in Serious Injuries

Motorcycle collisions involving left-turning vehicles are among the more common serious traffic accidents at intersections. Drivers turning across traffic may misjudge the speed or distance of an approaching motorcycle, especially in heavy traffic or low-light conditions.

In wrecks like these, investigators review turning movements, traffic signals, visibility, and vehicle damage after these crashes. The final positions of the vehicles and any roadway evidence may help determine how the collision occurred.

Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable in intersection crashes because they lack the protective structure found in passenger vehicles. Even at moderate speeds, riders may be thrown from the motorcycle during impact, increasing the risk of severe injuries requiring emergency hospital treatment.

2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
