Why Do Driveway-Related Crashes Occur on State Highways?
Crashes can happen when a vehicle enters a highway from a private driveway. Drivers pulling onto a roadway must judge the speed and distance of approaching traffic, which can be difficult on higher-speed roads.
Vehicles already traveling on the highway may have limited time to react. Even a short delay in braking can have serious consequences.
Visibility, lighting, and roadway design can also affect safety. On rural or semi-rural roads, fewer traffic controls may increase the risk when drivers attempt to merge into active lanes.
