Frequently Asked Questions
Why do crashes involving an impaired driver tend to cause more serious injuries?
Impaired drivers usually fail to brake or react before impact, so collisions happen at higher speeds and with less warning, which increases the force involved and the severity of injuries.
Does impairment from drugs other than alcohol also affect driving?
Yes. Prescription medications, illegal drugs, and even some over-the-counter drugs can slow reaction time, affect judgment, and reduce coordination behind the wheel.
What are some warning signs of an impaired driver on the road?
Common signs include swerving between lanes, inconsistent speed, delayed braking, driving without headlights at night, and following other vehicles too closely.
How does alcohol affect a driver's ability to operate a vehicle safely?
Alcohol slows reaction time, impairs judgment and coordination, and narrows a driver's field of attention, making it harder to respond to sudden hazards.
