Frequently Asked Questions
Why are crashes involving semi-trucks usually more serious than typical car accidents?
The size and weight difference between a loaded semi and a passenger vehicle means more force is transferred in a collision, which can lead to more serious vehicle damage and injury even in lower-speed crashes.
What are truck blind spots, and why do they matter in crashes like this?
Large trucks have wide blind spots along both sides, behind the trailer, and directly in front of the cab. Drivers merging near a truck, such as at an onramp, should stay visible in the truck's mirrors whenever possible.
What is an underride crash?
An underride crash happens when a smaller vehicle slides partially or fully beneath a truck's trailer during a collision, usually increasing the severity of injuries. It's unclear from available reports whether this crash involved underride.
What typically causes large-truck collisions on highways?
Common factors include merging conflicts near onramps, limited visibility, following distance, and driver fatigue, though the specific cause of any individual crash is determined through investigation.
