Mountain Home, ID (May 27, 2026) – Several law enforcement officers were injured Tuesday evening, May 26, while emergency units worked at multiple structure fires near Smith Road and Hamilton Road in Elmore County.
The fire was reported shortly before 7:00 p.m. near the intersection. Evacuations and traffic control were put in place as crews worked around the affected properties.
Officials said the fire had been contained, but crews continued checking damaged areas and completing safety assessments.
Displaced residents were directed to the Mountain Home Elks Lodge, where the American Red Cross was assisting evacuees.
The cause of the fire remains under review as investigators continue gathering details. We hope the injured officers recover quickly and that displaced residents receive needed support.
Why Structure Fires Can Create Risks During Evacuations
Structure fires can become dangerous for both residents and emergency crews, especially when several buildings or properties are involved. Smoke, heat, falling debris, downed power lines, and blocked roads can all make evacuation work harder. Crews may need to move people away quickly while also keeping traffic clear for fire engines and medical teams.
Injuries during fire-related evacuations can happen from smoke exposure, falls, burns, or contact with debris. Emergency workers may also face added risks while entering unstable areas or helping residents leave safely. After a fire is contained, crews often check for hot spots, damaged utilities, weakened walls, and unsafe access points. These steps help reduce the chance of rekindling and allow officials to decide when people may safely return.
