Kansas City, MO (May 27, 2026) – Two people were hurt early Wednesday, May 27, after a car hit a concrete support pillar near the Interstate 470 split in Kansas City.
The collision was reported just after 4:00 a.m. near U.S. Highway 71 and Interstate 435. Police said a black Infiniti was traveling south on Interstate 435 when it struck the pillar supporting an overhead highway sign.
Both the driver and passenger were taken to a local hospital. The passenger was listed in critical condition, while the driver’s medical status was not fully detailed.
The cause remains under review as investigators continue gathering information. We hope the passenger and driver receive the care needed during recovery.
Why Fixed-Object Accidents Can Cause Severe Injuries
Fixed-object accidents can be very serious because objects like concrete pillars do not move or absorb much force. When a vehicle hits a solid structure, the force may transfer directly into the front or side of the vehicle. People inside can be hurt by seat belts, airbags, dashboards, glass, or sudden movement.
Early morning highway travel can add risk because visibility may be lower and drivers may have less time to react near ramps or curves. Medical teams often check for head, chest, spine, limb, and internal injuries after severe highway contact. Investigators may review speed, lane position, road design, lighting, vehicle damage, and driver condition. These details can help explain how the vehicle left its path and why the passenger was critically hurt.
